Renovating your kitchen is a really exciting time: you get new appliances, new cupboards, new flooring but most importantly you’ll get a brand new look to a room that likely sees constant use. Your kitchen is going to look like something out of a magazine and you’re going to be so happy when it’s done, but how do you get through the renovation stage where everything is chaos? It’s tough not to imagine what the finished product will look like, but how do you get to the finish line without losing your mind? Here’s what to do when feeling overwhelmed with kitchen renovation.
Set Up a Temporary Kitchen
Most people don’t really think about this but, unless this renovation is going to be completed in a day, or you’ll still have access to the necessities of your kitchen while under construction, you need to find somewhere to prepare and eat meals until your kitchen is useable again. You can do this in your garage, if you have one, laundry room, utility room, etc. Consider where you can set up your fridge and stove so that you can still use it. If you’re doing a complete renovation that will take a few weeks to a month, or more do you really want to be eating take out for that long?
Consider Using Disposable Plates and Cutlery
It isn’t exactly the most environmentally friendly option, but when you don’t have your normal spot, or maybe any spot, to wash dishes in this might soon be realized to be a valid option. Stock up on paper plates and napkins, and plastic utensils. This will likely make getting through the renovation that much easier.
Use Small Appliances
If you won’t have access to your stove to do meal preparation then perhaps this is a great time to use your slow cooker, microwave, or toaster oven. It won’t be perfect, but meal planning to involve a slow cooker will also take a lot of preparation time off your hands since you can put it all together in the morning and it will be ready at night when you come home.
Get Some Snacks
While you take pride in preparing all of your meals, this is a great opportunity to stock up on those non-perishable snack options. It’s just temporary so you don’t have to go all out and buy everything in the store, but a few staples just to get you through this time will come in handy. Snacks like popcorn, crackers, chips and so on will help when you’re pressed for a good kitchen space to work with. Other options like pre-cut vegetable trays are also viable if available to you.
Reduce the Stress of a Kitchen Renovation
If you have a contractor that is doing the work for this then this might be a time to get away on a mini (or big) vacation. If it is an option it might help you to feel a little less stressed if you don’t have to walk around a home that’s under renovation.
Remember The End Goal
When you’re renovating any major part of your home, weeks can seem like years and it’s a stressful time for any home owner. It is important, though, to remember the end goal and what you’re going to accomplish when all is said and done. If you have a vision board or online photos saved of what your kitchen will look like in the end it’s important to keep looking at these so you know what you’re getting in the end and it will help to keep you in a good state of mind until the work is done.
